Virtual Door Gunner Trainer

Application:Weapons and Vehicle Simulation Training
Equipment:nVisor SX head-mounted display with integrated boom microphone
Provider:Raydon Corporation
Door Gunner Consultant Richard Graves operates Raydon's Virtual Door Gunner Trainer (I/ITSEC 2005 Orlando, FL).

The VDGT provides door gunnery and crew coordination training for UH-60 Blackhawk crew chiefs and pilots. The crewmen are immersed in realistic scenarios such as convoy support operations and insertion/extraction of troops designed to sharpen target acquisition skills. The VDGT also incorporates precision gunnery training to improve target engagement skills.

One VDGT helicopter is comprised of one pilot station, one left door-gunner station and one right door-gunner station. A pilot and single door-gunner can be used in a more simplified configuration. Each door-gunner station is composed of a scaled mock-up of the UH-60 crew-chief station, complete with seat, belt-restraint system and M240H (7.62mm) machine gun mock-up. The gunner?s visual scene is rendered to a helmet-mounted display worn by the gunner. Utilizing a 6-DOF head-tracking system, the gunner has a full 360-degree field of view. This enables the gunner to move anywhere within the station, including the ability to lean out of the door while secured via the belt-restraint system.
