Provider:VIRTE
Dr. Eric Muth, a VIRTE researcher from Clemson University, is shown in one of the VIRTE pods at NRL.

The Office of Naval Research (ONR) is sponsoring research in the use of Virtual Environments for military training. The Virtual Technologies and Environments program, or VIRTE, has two labs dedicated to advanced Virtual Environment research at the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) in Washington, DC.

VIRTE is examining technologies to fully immerse marines and sailors in a Virtual Environment, so they can train on tasks that are too dangerous, too expensive, or impossible to do in the real world. VIRTE is examining the training domain of infantry fire teams in Military Operations in Urban Terrain (MOUT).

A critical component of this research is studying the use of state of the art Head Mounted Displays (HMDs). HMDs give the participant a much greater sense of immersion into the virtual environment than is possible with a projection system.
